Semen Bank

A semen bank is a facility that collects and cryopreserve known healthy human donor’s sperm sample primarily for the purpose of artificial insemination. The purpose of sperm banking is to ensure the possibility of conception in the future. Nowadays infertility has become a major issue and due to many infertility programs voluntary sperm donation is highly appreciated over replacement donor, as many transient or occult sexually transmitted infections may not be properly detected and gives a birth of unhealthy child. It has been recorded that occult infection with HIV does occur in a greater frequency than do progressive infection.

Procedure :

  • All the donors are first screened on the basis of their physical examination, educational background, occupation, family background and social and mental health. Then the selected donors are tested for HIV, HbsAg, HCV, VDRL, & Thalassemia.
  • Then the donors with all test results negative are selected for the next step.
  • In next phase the semen samples are received to check the sperm quality and quantity. The donors with good parameters are selected and their samples are accepted in the bank.
  • The samples received from donors are kept under quarantine for 6 months as per ICMR guidelines and after 6 months the donors are re-screened. After that the samples from donors with negative serology are ready for use.
